Our Vero Beach History

Vero Beach Boutique - The Petite Shop - was built in 1952The Petite Shop was one of the first retail shops on the beach, attracting fashionable customers from near and far.

The shop was built in 1952 at the corner of Beachland Boulevard and Ocean Drive in Vero Beach, Florida.

While styles and designs  have changed over the past 57 years, The Petite Shop has remained a staple in the community and continues to cater to shoppers from all over the globe.

How We Began

Vero Beach Retail Shop continues to carry out-of-the-ordinary clothing and accessories.Nearly six decades ago, Dick and Evelyn Bireley built the Petite Shop in its prime Vero Beach location.  The Bireleys had owned and operated many successful boutiques and mail order businesses in Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton.  Vero Beach was merely their weekend getaway destination for years.  When Dick and Evelyn decided to build The Petite Shop, there were only two other shops on the beach, and the Bireleys were convinced the town would grow.  And grow it did!

This, their fifth boutique became an instant success featuring costume jewelry, accessories, handbags and novelty clothing.  Dede, the Bireley's daughter, took over the business with her husband Jim in 1970.  To this day, the store continues to be run by Jim Higdon and The Petite Shop still carries unusual and out-of-the-ordinary merchandise.
